March 2017 General Meeting

Hello Capital Area Progressive Democrats!

Please join us for our next club meeting on Tuesday, March 7 at 5:30pm.  We will meet at the AFL-CIO building located at 1106 Lavaca Street.  We’re fired up and you don’t want to miss this meeting!  Here are highlights for the next meeting:

  1. Guest speakers from Caritas of Austin.  Forced to flee their home country due to war and persecution, international refugees are at a crossroads in life. Each year, Caritas of Austin serves more than 500 refugees from various countries as they transition to life in the US and work to achieve self-sufficiency.  We are fortunate to have Landlord Outreach Specialist Rick Schneider and Program Manager Mamadou Balde to speak with us about their work and what CAPD can do to help.  Click here for more info about Caritas of Austin’s Refugee Resettlement Program.
  2. Resolution supporting Nick Chu for JP 5 appointment.  As many of you know, the Honorable Herb Evans, Travis County Justice of the Peace, Precinct Five, is retiring effective May 1, 2017.  The Travis County Commissioners Court will appoint someone to serve in that role until January 1, 2019.  We will discuss and vote on a resolution supporting the appointment of 2016 CAPD Kick Ass Award Winner Nick Chu for JP 5.  Click on this link to find more info about Nick.
  3. Upcoming Fundraising Projects.  We plan to discuss some upcoming fundraising projects, including our annual Kick Ass Awards.  We raise funds every year to continue our fight for progressive, Democratic values in Austin/Travis County.  Please come out with any additional ideas to raise funds in the fight against Republican extremism.

Make sure to like us on Facebook and check out our website!  That’s all folks.  See you at the meeting on Tuesday.

Craig Moore, CAPD Communications Chair

CAPD Membership Meeting on Feb. 7 at 5:30pm

Please join us for our next club meeting on Tuesday, February 7 at 5:30pm.  We will meet at the AFL-CIO building located at 1106 Lavaca Street.  You don’t want to miss this meeting!  Here are highlights for the next meeting:

  1. Discussion about CodeNEXT and affordable housing, featuring District 5 Councilmember Ann Kitchen.  CodeNEXT is the new City of Austin initiative to revise the Land Development Code, which determines how land can be used throughout the city – including what can be built, where it can be built, and how much can (and cannot) be built.  This will be an informative discussion, so please come with your questions for CM Kitchen!
  2. Stand with Sheriff Sally Hernandez Resolution.  We are proud of Sheriff Hernandez and will take up a resolution of support for her.
  3. Upcoming CAPD Projects.  Thanks to all that participated in the Point-in-Time count. Come out to hear about all the CAPD projects that are forthcoming!

In addition to CAPD projects, don’t forget to check the TDCP calendar for other events to support progressive, Democratic values.

Make sure to like us on Facebook and check out our website!  See you on Tuesday.

CAPD fired up for 2017

Fellow Capital Area Progressive Democrats –

Thank you for joining us last night at our first meeting of 2017. We had one of the best turnouts for a regular meeting in years. Thank you to everyone that joined us!

We had a robust conversation about our goals for 2017 and agreed to focus our progressive efforts on affordability, housing and racial justice. To that end, we’re starting 2017 with some great volunteer opportunities and programs:

1.  Please sign up for the 2017 Homelessness Point in Time Count on January 28. We’re forming multiple teams which will participate in this crucial annual event.  Please sign up for the 3am shift and note that you’re a CAPD member.  Sign up here: http://austinecho.org/get-involved/2017-point-in-time-count/

2. At our February 7, 2017 meeting, we’ll have a panel discussion on Austin affordability, housing and CodeNext led by a member of the City Council.

3. Later in February we’ll have a volunteer session with Inside Books Project whose mission is to get free books and educational material to people incarcerated in Texas prisons. Eva Gonzales will head up this effort.

4. At our March meeting we will have a panel discussion focused on addressing racial discrimination and criminal justice reform.

5. We will begin planning our club participation in a fall Habitat for Humanity build project.

A big thank you to Ken Craig for leading the discussion at our first meeting of 2017! And congratulations to all of the CAPD-endorsed candidates that were sworn into office this week.  We wish them well and continued success.

Thank you for standing up as a progressive Democrat in these challenging times. With Trump and the Republicans about to take over Washington, DC, now is the time for us to step up locally and fight for our values. Together, we shall overcome.

Democratically yours,

Rick Cofer
Chair, Capital Area Progressive Democrats
